Tesla Enters Luxury EV Market With Model Y

After more than a decade of speculation, Tesla enters luxury EV space in India, officially launching the Model Y. The U.S. electric vehicle giant has finally begun deliveries, signaling a historic step for India’s premium EV segment. However, despite the excitement, the consumer response has been slower than expected compared to global markets.

Tesla Enters Luxury EV Market With Model Y Deliveries

Tesla launched the Model Y in mid-July 2025 and began deliveries in September. The first car was handed over to Maharashtra’s Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik on 5th September 2025.

According to Vahan dashboard data, Tesla delivered 64 units of Model Y in September. While this marks Tesla’s entry into India’s premium EV charts, it’s far below the company’s performance in the U.S. and Europe, where hundreds of cars are sold every few hours.

Bloomberg earlier reported that Tesla received just over 600 bookings for the Model Y in India, much lower than internal expectations.

For India, Tesla imports the Model Y from its Shanghai Gigafactory. The company plans to dispatch 350–500 units by December 2025.

Tesla has opened showrooms only in Mumbai and Delhi, while deliveries are being carried out in Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, and Pune. Despite entering the luxury EV space, Tesla has no plans to expand its showrooms to new cities in the near future.

  • Expansion to Bengaluru is expected soon, though without a showroom.

Market Response – Tesla Enters Luxury EV With Slow Start

While Tesla enters luxury EV charts with high expectations, its actual sales remain in double digits. Factors such as premium pricing, limited showroom availability, and evolving EV infrastructure appear to be restricting its initial growth.

However, industry experts believe that as awareness grows and infrastructure expands, Tesla’s luxury EV positioning will help it capture a significant share of India’s premium EV market.
